“This novel redefines the traditional American love story,” Oprah said in a statement. “You’ll come away with greater empathy and understanding but even if you don’t, it’s just a really great read. It’s the perfect book to read along with a friend or family member.”
Tayari’s writing is well crafted, captivating and engaging, which is always hard to achieve when writing about a sensitive subject. According to reviews by several readers, she displays her amazing gift by portraying love, marriage, family, and community in America, while exploring the more sensitive and complex issues of race, class, gender, abortion, the injustices of America’s judicial system, and the prison system.
It’s a story about a man named Roy and a lady by the name Celestial. The two meet through a mutual friend who unlike them, grew up in a wealthy neighborhood. They don’t fall in love until a year later when she is an art student in NYC and he is there on business.
After a year of marriage, they start talking about having children and moving to a new house. They are faced with ups and downs but their love for each other keeps them together.
It’s all sunshine and rainbow until Roy gets arrested for a crime he didn’t commit. He is tried and convicted for 12 years in Louisiana. His imprisonment devastates his parents and leaves his new marriage hanging in the balance.
Roy and Celestial are both flawed, and this is obvious from the beginning even before Roy goes to prison. But it makes them human and completely vulnerable. While in prison, they use letters to communicate. It’s interesting how Tayari wrote the letters, it made it seem like they were talking in person. This brought out the vulnerability in Roy and Celestial……
Woooh, this is an amazing book to read and I don’t want to spoil the ending for you 🙂 It will make you smile and cry for sure. Tayari’s writing is subtle, clever, and insightful with her ability to understand human emotions.
